Ring Sizing: The Complete Guide to Finding Your Perfect Fit

An ill-fitting ring is uncomfortable and potentially unsafe for your stone. Our comprehensive guide covers every method for measuring ring size accurately, from home techniques to professional fitting.

Ring sizing seems simple until it isn't. Fingers swell in heat, shrink in cold, change over the years, and vary between hands. A ring that slides effortlessly onto your finger at the jeweler's counter may be stubbornly tight at the end of a summer day. Understanding how sizing works — and how to measure correctly — ensures your investment fits perfectly from the first wearing.

Understanding Ring Size Systems

Ring sizes vary by country. The US uses numerical sizes (typically 3–13 for women, 7–14 for men). The UK and Australia use letters. Europe uses millimeter circumference measurements. When purchasing internationally, always confirm which system is being used and request conversion if needed.

The Best Time to Measure

Measure your ring size at room temperature, mid-day. Avoid measuring first thing in the morning (fingers are slightly swollen from sleep) or after vigorous exercise or alcohol consumption (increased circulation enlarges fingers temporarily). For rings worn on the dominant hand, measure that hand — it is typically slightly larger.

Home Measurement Methods

The most reliable home method uses a strip of paper: wrap it snugly around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimeters. This is the circumference. Divide by 3.14 to get the diameter, and refer to a size chart.

Alternatively, if you have a ring that fits well, measure its internal diameter with a ruler. The diameter in millimeters maps directly to standard European sizes.

Wide Bands Require Larger Sizes

A ring that is 6mm or wider will fit more snugly than a slim band of the same size. As a rule, size up by half a size for every 2mm of additional band width beyond 4mm. At JustzJewelry, our specialist will always advise on this adjustment during sizing.

Professional Fitting

Nothing replaces trying physical sizing rings — the mandrel-based metal ring gauges used by goldsmiths. We recommend visiting our atelier for complimentary professional sizing before ordering any ring, particularly eternity bands and full-pave designs that cannot be resized without disturbing the stone settings.

Resizing

Most simple gold and silver bands can be resized up or down by one to two sizes. Eternity bands and tension-set rings typically cannot. Our craftsmen can advise on your specific piece. We offer complimentary first resizing within 30 days of purchase on all eligible rings.
